 Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is the question I get asked most of all! Note that my tips below are specifically tailored to my classes and methodology. Other instructors have different expectations and requirements. If you’re ever unsure, ask your teacher directly.

Beginner Drop-In: 0-3 years of experience

My beginner classes are always designed to welcome brand new dancers, with no experience at all, in addition to focusing on foundational elements and moving at a slower pace.

Expect: targeted, conditioning warm-up short combination, including progressions and modifications for more advanced dancers

Great for: getting started, refining foundations, focusing on technique, and #dancemagic feels

    Intermediate/Advanced Drop-In: 4+ years of experience

My Int/Adv classes are designed for dancers with a high level of self-awareness and the ability to modify class to fit their personal goals and objectives.

Expect: Targeted, conditioning warm-up, Guided improvisation, Choreography

Great for: choreo retention and performance, artistic development, technical practice, and #dancemagic feels

Remember: true progress is measured in comparison to where YOU were yesterday. Not just in moving from one level to the next. Find joy in the practice, not just the performance.

  • YES! Was there a part in the choreo that felt sticky? Drill it when you get home and then try it again after a good sleep. Was there a technical step that had you feeling challenged? Keep drilling it at home! Practicing on your own will always support your progress more than only dancing in class.

  • Ask for feedback! I can see you and am happy to provide direct notes or observations on your progress.

Video: sometimes change feels like it’s slow, but when you see it in front of you, you can’t deny it. For the love/hate relationship I have with class footage, it’s definitely worth it to see how far you’ve come. It’s also a great way to self-critique (with kindness!) what you want to continue to focus on.

Journal: even just a couple notes in your phone after class! How did you feel today? What felt hard? Did something feel easier? Self-reflection and debriefing post-class can help to track patterns in your development and remain mindful of your goals and progression.

  • Tell me! Email or DM me before class. We can talk about what feels most scary and how I can support you. Trying something new is HARD! I’ve been there and I’m here to help.

Embrace the “bad”. Give yourself permission to be new and awkward and figure it out. We all start somewhere and being at the beginning is the best because the only way to go is up!

Bring a friend. Share the experience and then go for a post-class snack where you can laugh all about it and celebrate trying something that made you nervous!

    • Arrive early to say hi and let me know if you’ve got any injuries or questions

    • Make sure you bring a water bottle!

    • Wear cotton socks (synthetic is too slippery) or bare feet

    • Wear clothing that you can easily move and sweat in - baggy is fine, as long as you won’t trip or get tangled

Bring an open heart and be ready for FUN!
